To become a cosmetologist in Illinois, you must be pass the professional license examination given by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation. Professional cosmetologists, cosmetology instructors, and hands on clinic teachers must renew by September 30th of even years like 2010 and 2012. They must also prove that they have completed 14 hours of continued education and received the appropriate CEU credits. Professional barbers must renew by July 31st every odd year like 2013 and 2015, and are advised to renew within the month of June.

School Accreditation
You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.
If you are a licensed personal care professional from another state that would like to work in Illinois, you must present your cosmetology license to the board. If you only have access to a copy of your license, it must display your legal name, the issuance date, the expiration date, the cosmetology license number, and a listing of the licensing exams you have completed, the degrees you received and any disciplinary actions (if any) pending against your license.
There are many reasons you might want to choose a career in cosmetology. You will graduate in much less time than if you pursue your studies at a four year institute and the job market is quite good for people that work in this field. You will start your professional career in less than two years, whereas people that attend four year schools might not enter the workforce until after college and might not start their actual professional careers for many years after that.
