Find a Cosmetology School

Before applying for a cosmetology license in Illinois, you must first meet the Illinois State Board of Cosmetology’s education requirements, to ensure you are properly trained in the cosmetology specialty of your choosing.  The required training hours you need to complete before testing are:

  • Cosmetologist: 1500 training hours
  • Esthetician:  750 training hours
  • Manicurist:  350 training hours
  • Barber:  1500 training hours
  • Massage Therapist:  500 training hours
  • Electrolysis Technician: 600 training hours

Like most states, you cannot supplement apprenticeship for training. However, in some instances, an internship can count for up to 150 training hours. You must intern under the direct supervision of a licensed and practicing cosmetologist that works at a registered and approved salon. You must also be registered in an organized & pre-planned training program and have completed 750 hours of training and currently have an average grade of 80 or higher.
