All Beauty Programs in South Dakota
You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.
Choosing a cosmetology school and beauty program is your first step to joining the growing beauty industry in South Dakota. In order to sit for your state exam and be eligible for licensure, The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission requires that you complete the following required classroom hours for each of the cosmetology specialty:
- Cosmetologist: 2100 training hours
- Cosmetology Instructor: Current license + 1,000 hours of work experience + 1,1012 training hours
- Nail Technician: 400 training hours
- Esthetician: 600 training hours
- Massage Therapist: 500 training hours
The required parts of the exam include the National-Interstate Council theory, the National-Interstate Council hands-on practical, and the South Dakota laws/rules test for cosmetology, esthetics and nail technicians. In order to be licensed to perform Microdermabrasion or Electric Nail Filing, you must also complete a one-time continuing education requirement.
