Education Requirements for Becoming an Esthetician in Michigan

The demand for great skin is on the rise all over the United States as both men and women realize how much the health of their skin can impact their appearance. If you love working with different skin care products and using makeup to enhance the appearance of skin, the field of esthetics could be the perfect career opportunity for you.

With a Michigan esthetician license, you have the freedom to work with clients all over the state.

Before you can jump into the licensure process, however, you have to go through a rigorous training process. By the time you complete an approved Michigan esthetician program, you should have the knowledge you need to pass your licensing exams.

In order to qualify for licensure, you must choose an approved esthetics school that covers the following topics:
• Use of antiseptics, tonics, lotions, creams, and cosmetic preparations
• Cleansing and stimulation of skin with hands, devices, apparatus, and appliances
• Hair removal, including depilatories, waxing, and tweezing
• Facials
• Makeup application
• Eyelash application

Each of these topics covers many different specialized procedures and products. Some of the skills you may learn in your training include:
• Body wrapping
• Facials with hands, appliances, and apparatus
• Airbrush makeup application

There’s a good reason that esthetics is one of the fastest-growing specialties in cosmetology—it is the key to maintaining a youthful, healthy appearance.

Michigan Esthetician License Requirements

Education is the very first step to esthetics licensure. This process and all of its requirements are regulated by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Like most other states, they have a comprehensive testing protocol in place.

Be ready to meet the following requirements and pay the esthetician licensing fees listed below:
• $161 combined testing fee; $91 each if taken separately
• $15 application fee
• Fees paid by credit card, money order, company check, or cashier’s check
• 400 hours or six-month apprenticeship required

Michigan esthetician license requirements serve many purposes in the beauty industry. First, they make it easy for consumers to know which beauty professionals they can trust. Second, these standards ensure that skin care specialists have the standard set of skills needed to adequately meet clients’ expectations.

How to Get Your Michigan Esthetician’s License Renewed

After you get your MI esthetics license, it is valid for up to two years, depending on your original licensure date. All estheticians must renew their licenses by the last day in August every two years to continue working. The renewal fee is $48, but you may have to pay additional fees if you renew late.

Michigan does not require any ongoing education for esthetics professionals, but this can change at any time, so you should stay up-to-date on renewal requirements in Michigan.

Getting licensed in skin care can give you an exciting career that you look forward to every day. Check out your options now with our list of esthetics programs in Michigan.
