School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Licensing Requirements in Washington

Washington State Department of Licensing states that a person must be 17 years or older in order to take the licensing exam. In addition, a person must have graduated from a school that is licensed by the Department of Licensing. The program must consist of at least 1,000 hours of study. A person may also complete a 1,200-hour apprenticeship to be eligible. Once the person completes the minimum training or education, he or she must take a test and pass a test that focuses on theory aspect of barbering.

Job and Employment Outlook for Barbers in Washington

The job outlook for barbers in Washington is about average for all jobs. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the average job growth for barbering is 14 percent, which this increase is expected to occur between 2010 and 2020. A majority of the positions that will be opening up are from current barbers retiring or leaving the profession for other reasons. Washington is one of the top five states with the highest concentration of barbering jobs, not taking into consideration the number of barbers that are self employed. Those who choose to work in Washington can expect to make an average of about $30,580 per year, which is equivalent to $14.70 per hour. This rate is slightly higher than the national average, which is $13.23 per hour or $27,520 annually.
