The Vermont State Board of Cosmetology makes a distinction between a cosmetology license and a barber license. After reaching the minimum number of hours a student must take and pass the state board licensing test. Licenses must be renewed every two years in those years ending in an odd number. The cost to renew is $120. Vermont does accept out-of-state requirements if they are equivalent to Vermont’s. The state board exam is still required and a $90 transfer fee for your out-of-state license.

Vermont’s annual mean salary is well above the national at a reported $29,590 and is listed as the 5th top paying state in the nation. The Burlington-South Burlington metropolitan area reports an impressive $36,490 annual mean salary that places it 7th in the nation. The BLS projects a 14% job growth from 2010 to 2020 for a bright outlook in this occupation.
