Cosmetologist Licensing in South Carolina

To become a cosmetologist in South Carolina, you will need to obtain a certification from a licensed cosmetology school. The South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology also requires that you successfully pass a written exam upon your graduation from a cosmetology school. You will also be required to meet a certain hour requirement for each type of license that you wish to pursue. If you want to obtain a cosmetology license, then you will need to accumulate a total of 1,500 hours of instruction and training. If you want an esthetician license, then you will need to acquire 450 hours of training and instruction. To become a nail technician, you will need to acquire 300 hours of training and instruction.

A cosmetologist license must be renewed every two years. Cosmetologists are required to obtain 12 continuing education credits for a renewal.
