Hair Schools and Programs in Oregon

Cosmetology and hair dressing academic programs help students learn about crafting different hairstyles and inspecting the health of a person’s hair and scalp. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), hairstylists and cosmetologists all help clients with their hair care needs and provide the client’s want for a better hairstyle, a haircut, or advice related to scalp health issues.

To work in this field, each state mandates that a student must attend a state-approved cosmetology or barber school. The programs may take less time than a two-year degree, but some programs may be full, two-year associate degrees. All states require barbers, hair dressers, and cosmetologists to be licensed.

According to the BLS, the entire country is expected to see a 14 percent employment growth for hair dressers and cosmetologists between 2010 and 2020. This is because these professions are needed to meet with the demands of population growth and the increasing demands for hair styling for professional or personal aesthetic reasons. On a national level, the BLS states that the median hourly salary, as of May 2010, for barbers calculated to $11.45 an hour, while hairdressers, hair stylists, and cosmetologists earned $10.94 an hour. As of May 2012, the BLS reports that the annual mean wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists calculated to $29,020 a year in Oregon. Information about barbers could not be attained for the state or Oregon.

The BLS recommends a career in cosmetology and hair styling for people who have a creative side and can think quickly on their feet. Hair styles go through style trends, and a person who cannot follow the trends will not be able to meet many customer demands. In addition, cosmetology and hair styling is physically-demanding, as the person is on their feet a lot. Customer service skills must also be exceptionally good, since these professionals have to listen carefully to what a customer wants for their hair style.
