If you have always enjoyed being creative with cosmetics and hairstyles, and want a passion filled career, becoming a cosmetologist may be the perfect job for you.
You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.
It is a career option that allows you to express yourself but also help other people feel confident at the same time. Each state has different cosmetology schools designed to teach you the art as well as various licensing requirements that you will need to prepare for.
Ohio Requirements for Cosmetologists
In the state of Ohio, according to the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, there are over fifty different schools you can choose from to begin fulfilling your dreams of becoming a cosmetologist. In the city of Columbus alone there are more than six different private schools, not counting career technical schools. In this center city an interested student can begin exploring with the Regency Beauty Institute, which also has campuses in Cincinnati, Dayton, Holland, Jackson Township, North Olmsted, Springdale, Akron, and Willoughby. Columbus also boasts the Aveda Institute Columbus.
Those in the northeast part of the state may want to travel to Cleveland and check out The Cut Beauty School on Cedar Road or Remington College on Broadway Avenue. Those in the northwest can head over to Tiffin for the Tiffin Academy of Hair Design on Market Street. In the southeast, Marietta has Preston’s Beauty Academy, while the southwest city of Cincinnati has the Eastern Hills Academy of Hair Design and Empire Beauty School. There are also many more schools in each of these cities as well as the smaller cities throughout Ohio. A complete list of accredited schools can be found on the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology website.
Cosmetology Licensing in Ohio
To become a fully licensed cosmologist in the state, a student must also fulfill certain requirements. They must be at least 16 years old and of good moral character with the equivalent of a 10th grade education. They must also pass an examination for the branch of cosmetology they would like to practice, and pay fees to the board.
To prepare, they must also complete a mandatory number of hours of training. For cosmetology, it is 1500 hours, an esthetician 600 hours, hair designer 1200 hours, and manicurist 200 hours. Schools are very helpful for students looking to complete their hours and receive formal training. They also offer guidance to complete the licensing process. For cosmetologists who have licenses in other states with equal or stricter guidelines than Ohio, they can receive a license for the state without needing to complete the exam.
