Hair Cutting Licensing Requirements in New York

If you want to obtain your natural hair styling license, you must be 17 years or older and have completed a training program approved by the State Board. The training must be at least 300 hours long. You can also opt to earn your cosmetology license, which will adequately prepare you to do hair. It requires you to complete a 1000-hour long, state-approved program. Once you complete either program, you will be required to take an exam that includes a practical portion and a written portion.
