Finding Your NY Fashion Design Program

New York is the fashion capital of the United States, offering students dozens of quality fashion design programs. Nearly half of all fashion designers in the country practice from New York. In New York, fashion school tuition averages $22,500 per semester. Scholarships average $10,634 and the acceptance rate hits just over 50% of applicants to their programs.

Most programs in New York offer special events such as fashion shows, internships in New York City with some of the most famous fashion houses, and opportunities to study in fashion capitols overseas. You can choose from schools that offer a variety of degrees ranging from certificates in fashion design and related specialties to a Ph.D. in Fashion and Apparel Design from powerhouse Cornell University. You can have the opportunity to compete at competitions at schools such as the Pratt Institute-Main  to win scholarships as well as recognition in the fashion industry. If you choose Pratt Institute, you will be required to show your work in galleries or in showrooms as part of the Pratt Institute curriculum. LIM College has been named one of the “Best Northeastern Colleges” by the prestigious Princeton Review.

The fashion design programs at SUNY College at Buffalo are closely associated with the American Apparel Footwear Association (AAFA); the American Association of Textiles Chemists and Colorists (AATC); the American Collegiate Retailing Association (ACRA); and the International Textiles Apparel Textile Association (ITAA).The fashion design department offers scholarships and other financial assistance. In addition, the AAFA offers $5000 scholarships for fashion design majors every year.

Another option you may consider is the Cornell Institute of Fashion and Fiber Innovation (CIFFI).  Here you may have the chance to study and work with its apparel labs, state-of-the-art industrial production equipment, and computer and CAD systems including software, fabric printing and digitizers. The Cornell Costume and Textile Collection holds over 9000 items covering several centuries and including rare collections from around the world, and is another great fashion program choice.

The Fashion Institute of Technology affiliates with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and several apparel manufacturers. It also allows students to study internationally acclaimed collection of historical, designer and couture garments.  FIT offers a one-of-a-kind International BFA Degree where as a first-year student, you may begin your education in Italy.

Working as a New York Fashion Designer

New York fashion designers earn an annual average salary of $81,450 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. New York employs more fashion designers than any other state and is second only to Illinois in fashion designer salaries. The New York City metropolitan area has the highest employment for fashion designers in the nation and has the fifth-highest annual average salary. As a fashion design professional in the state, you could join the New York Fashion Association, and participate in the New York Fashion Week held in February and September of each year.
