The New Mexico Regulation & Licensing Department requires that cosmetology instructors have a license to teach in the state. The fee for a cosmetologist license is $50. If you wish to apply for reciprocity of an existing cosmetology instructor license, then you will need to pay a fee of $150. Licenses must be renewed once every year, and there is a $50 fee for a license renewal. If you wish to obtain a duplicate license, then there is a fee of $25.  A duplicate license can make you eligible to teach different specialties such as esthetics or nail design.

To apply for an instructor license, you will need to ensure that you have at least 1,000 credit hours and a current cosmetologist license. You should also check to make sure that a cosmetology instructor program is accredited in New Mexico.

Employment Opportunities in New Mexico for Cosmetology Instructors

According to the BLS, vocational education teachers earn an average annual salary of $49,320 a year. There are only 540 vocational education teachers working in New Mexico, so it is likely that there is a high demand for cosmetology instructors. You can find positions available in beauty schools, private colleges or public universities. Some individuals also wish to obtain a teaching certification so that they can work in an administrative position within a beauty school.
