Permanent Makeup Licensing in New Jersey

The New Jersey Department of Health is responsible for administering regulations in regards to permanent makeup artistry while the local health departments are charged with licensing establishments that wish to practice body art and cosmetic procedures.

Under the regulations in New Jersey for permanent makeup artists, you must complete a 40-hour training program that has been approved by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals or International Micropigmentation Association. In addition, an applicant must submit a photo of a procedure that he or she has completed for eyebrows, lip liner, full lip color or eyeliner, in order to perform these procedures. In addition, permanent makeup artists who wish to practice areola restoration will need to complete a minimum of an eight-hour training program that has been approved by the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals or International Micropigmentation Association.  Compared to other state, New Jersey’s are much more specific in defining its safety and cleanliness standards for practicing technicians.

Career Outlook for Permanent Makeup Artists in New Jersey

According to the BLS, makeup artists earn an average annual salary of $45,410 a year. You have a great potential to earn much higher salaries than this, depending on a number of reasons, including how many clients you see weekly.  For example, a permanent makeup artist who charges $350 per procedure and completes at least four procedures a week could easily make $72,800 a year in New Jersey. A high-end practice that charges $650 per procedure could earn as much as $135,200 for completing just four procedures a week.
