School Accreditation

You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

By the time you complete the necessary training, you should feel equipped to help cosmetology students succeed in the cosmetology program and to pass the state board exams.

Licensing Requirements for Cosmetology Instructors in New Jersey

In New Jersey, the New Jersey State Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling issues licenses for beauty professionals. In order to become a cosmetology teacher, you have to hold a New Jersey cosmetology license and be 18 years old to start. You can get a New Jersey cosmetology license by training or by endorsement. To get a license by training, you must be 17 years old and have a high school diploma, a GED or equivalent certification.  After completing 1200 hours of cosmetology training at a board approved school you will take a written and practical exam.  If you pass, you will submit your application for licensure and pay a $50 filling fee and a $60 licensing fee.

If you hold a cosmetology license in another US state or from another country, you must get a New Jersey license by endorsement. To get your license by endorsement, the filing fee is $100 and the licensing fee $60.  In addition to the above requirements you must also present paperwork documenting your training, test scores and any previous work experience.

Once completed, you can become licensed as a cosmetology instructor.  In New Jersey this means you must be 18 years old, and worked at a licensed salon for a minimum of six months.  Additionally, you must have completed a “Teacher Training,” course for 500 hours at a board approved school (or in a training program similar to New Jersey’s) and complete a “Teacher Methods,” course for 30 hours at a board approved school.
