Overview of Cosmetology Schools and Curriculum in Mississippi

There are many career opportunities in the personal care industry in Mississippi including cosmetology, barbering, skin care, massage and nail care. Cosmetology school will prepare you for a successful career in one of these fields. Along with school books and traditional supplies, you will also need to have your own set of tools specific to your trade. For example, cosmetology and barbering students will need things like brushes, clippers, shears, irons and mannequin heads, and as a massage student, you will need things like oils, lotions, sheets, towels and a massage table.

Cosmetologist Licensing in Mississippi

In Mississippi, you have to complete a certain number of training hours at an accredited training program before you will be eligible to test for your exam. Exams are administered by the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology. The hours you will need to complete are as follows:

– Cosmetology – 1500 Hours
– Master of Cosmetology – 1516 Hours
– Cosmetology Instructor – You must complete 12 College Semester Hours, taking courses that are pre-approved by the state board. If you have less than two years of experience in the field, you must then complete an additional 2000 Hours of training at an accredited cosmetology training program. If you have more than two years of experience in the cosmetology field, then you will only need to complete an additional 750 Hours of training at an accredited program.
– Esthetician – 600 Hours
– Esthetician Instructor – If you have less than two years of experience in the field, you will need to complete an additional 1000 Hours of training at an accredited training program. If you have more than two years of experience, then you will only need to complete an additional 600 Hours.
– Barbering – 1500 Hours
– Nail Technician – 350 Hours
– Massage Therapist – 700 Hours

All licenses must be renewed every two years; and though strongly encouraged, continuing education classes are not required for most professions. However, a Cosmetology Instructor needs to complete 24 CEU credits every two years and a Master Cosmetologist must complete 18 CEU credits every two years.
