You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Hair Cutting and Styling Licensing Requirements in Minnesota

To cut and style hair in Minnesota, you can work as a Cosmetologist, a Cosmetology Instructor or a Hair Braider. Each job has different training requirements and once you complete the appropriate training for each job, you can sit for the Written and Practical Exams. You can take your exams in English, Vietnamese, Korean and Spanish, and when you pass your exams, you will receive a license from the Minnesota Board of Cosmetologist Examiners.
Here are the training requirements for each job:

– Cosmetology – 1550 Hours of Training
– Hair Braider – a 30 Hour Sanitation Course

To become a Cosmetology Instructor, you must first obtain your Cosmetology License; then you have to complete 1400 Hours of Work Experience in the field, 38 More Hours of Training and Three Exams.

You must renew your license every three years in Minnesota by December 31st. For Operators, the cost is $81 to renew and for Cosmetology Instructors and Managers, the cost is $114. In addition, Cosmetology Instructors have to complete 45 Continuing Education Hours during the three year period between renewals.

In order to transfer your out of state license and work in Minnesota, you have to be licensed in your home state. You must then provide the Board with:

– Proof of licensure
– A copy of your high school diploma
– Proof of the training you completed and your scores
– Your Application for Reciprocity
– A $39 application fee

If you have not completed the same number of training hours that Minnesota requires or more, you will have to complete the required training before you can work. You can train in Minnesota or in your home state before moving.
