In a typical hair cutting program, you will need to take courses in hair shaping, highlights, hair coloring, chemical treatments, professional etiquette and sanitation procedures. You will also be required to take a course in the laws and regulations of Massachusetts. There are plenty of educational opportunities awaiting the student who wishes to become a master of hair design.

Hair Cutting Licensing Requirements in Massachusetts

To become a hair dresser in Massachusetts, students will need to obtain at least 1,000 hours of instruction and training from an approved school. Students are required to meet this threshold before sitting for the state board exams. Students may not use an apprenticeship experience in lieu of obtaining the required credit hours from an approved institution. Students should be aware that they will need to renew their licenses every two years in Massachusetts. To renew a license, students will need to pay a fee of $68. In Massachusetts, there is no reciprocity for students who seek to transfer an existing license from another state. Massachusetts does not require that students obtain any continuing education credits before renewing a license.

Employment Outlook for Hair Stylists in Massachusetts

According to the BLS, the average salary of hair stylists in Massachusetts is about $29,540 a year. There are currently 10,780 hair stylists employed in the state. The BLS expects that the demand for hair stylists will grow by at least seven percent in the next 10 years. The BLS also anticipates that there will be a three percent increase in the salary that hair stylists currently receive in Massachusetts.
