Choosing Your Maryland Fashion Design School

If you are preparing to enter fashion design school, you can earn a Fashion Certificate, an Associate’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion at one of several Maryland schools. Maryland fashion design programs average $21,000 per year. In Maryland, fashion design students receive scholarships averaging over $7000 per year and loans averaging over $8000 per year. Maryland fashion design schools accept just over 50% of the applicants. Class usually average only 15 students.

Some Maryland fashion design programs are very inventive. For instance, MICA, the Maryland Institute-College of Art, has a program within their Fiber Arts degree focusing on experimental fashion design. This program lets you learn about fashion in the context of culture and artistic expression while gaining the skills needed to make garments and costumes. MICA also offers a graduate program in Fashion Design.

At Stevenson College, you can earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Design. The school’s Fashion Apparel Design Club co-sponsors the annual Destination Fashion Week on campus. You may be given the opportunity to travel to Europe, visiting the major world fashion capitals. They also visit the famous Garment District in New York City and participate in local events such as the Baltimore Fashion Week, Artscape, and the Baltimore Fashion Alliance.

The Baltimore City Community College Fashion Design degree may train you to be a freelance fashion designer or to start a career in the fashion design business. The College also has an option to pursue a Fashion Retailing Degree. There is a Fashion Design Certificate available for you if you already have a degree in fashion, but want to upgrade your skills. This program was awarded a teaching excellence and innovative curriculum designation by the Textile Manufacturers Institute.

Work as a Maryland Fashion Designer

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), fashion designers in Maryland earn an annual average salary of $30,095. The state hosts Maryland Fashion Week every August, drawing designers from fashion houses around the world. The Maryland Fashion Week is unique in that it incorporates models of all sizes from children, petites to full-figured models in their runway shows.
