Barber Licensing in Maryland

According to Maryland’s Department of Labor’s Licensing and Regulation, a person must submit proof of completing 1,200 hours of barber training in order to be eligible to take the licensing exam. The training must be from a certified barber school. A student may also qualify for the examination if he or she completes 2,250 hours of hands-on training as a registered apprentice working underneath a licensed barber. Once a person completes this portion, he or she can work as a barber for a minimum of 15 months and be eligible to test to become a master barber.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the employment opportunities in barbering for individuals in Maryland is projected to grow at a rate of 14 percent from 2010 until 2020, which is about average for all occupations.
