Hair Cutting and Styling Licensing Requirements in Louisiana

In order to style and cut hair in Louisiana, you can obtain licensure as a Cosmetologist, Cosmetology Instructor, Barber or Hair Designer. The Louisiana Board of Cosmetology will administer your test and issue your license. You can only take the test in English, and you cannot substitute training hours with apprenticeship hours. In order to sit for your Written and Practical Exams, you must complete 500 training hours.In order to obtain a license as a Cosmetology Instructor, you will need to obtain your Cosmetology License and then take an additional 500 Hours of Training. After this, you can take your Cosmetology Instructor’s tests.

You must renew your license every year before your birthday. In-state renewals are $25 and out-of-town renewals are $50. You don’t have to take any additional continuing education courses in order to renew, but signing up for additional education will always pay off.

If you want to transfer to Louisiana from New York, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Vermont, Minnesota, Michigan, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Maryland, Florida, Colorado, Connecticut, Kansas or Texas, you must take the State Theory Exam ($25), the NIC Exam ($25) and the Practical Exam ($25). You must also pay the license fee of $50. All other transfers are determined on a case by case basis.
