Hair Cutting Licensing Requirements in Iowa

In order to obtain licensure for hair cutting and styling in Iowa, you must complete training and test for a Cosmetology or Cosmetology Instructor’s license. Exams are administered in English by PSI and licenses are issued by the Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences.

– To get your Cosmetology license, you must complete 2100 Hours of Training at an accredited school and then take your exams.
– To obtain your Cosmetology Instructor’s license, you must have obtained your Cosmetology License, and have completed 1000 Hours of Instructor Training at an accredited school, or have at least two years of experience, completed within the last six years.

As a beauty professional in Iowa, you will have to renew your license on December 31st during even number years like 2010 and 2012. You will also have to have completed Eight Hours of Continuing Education Training in order to renew and renewal costs $60.

If you have a cosmetology license in another state and would like to cut and style hair in Iowa, you can transfer your license by way of endorsement. Transfers are considered on a case by case basis, and you must have training and experience in your home state that is similar to that required by the Iowa Board.
