Cosmetologist Licensing in Iowa

The Iowa Board of Cosmetology lists their specific hour requirements for each type of beauty career. If you intend on becoming a cosmetologist, then you will need to complete 2,100 hours of coursework and instruction in order to receive your cosmetology license. To learn about the requirements for a barbering license, you will need to contact the Barbering Board. To become an esthetician, you will need to complete a total of 600 hours of coursework and instruction. The license for a nail technician requires a commitment of 325 hours.

Every two years, cosmetologists are required to renew their licenses. One must renew a license on December 31 of even-numbered years. To renew a license, cosmetologists will need to pay a fee of $60. Also, individuals must complete at least eight hours of continuing education credits to renew a license.

Job and Employment Outlook for Cosmetologists in Iowa

The average salary of a cosmetologist in Iowa is $24,860 according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Manicurists and pedicurists have an annual salary of $28,420.
