You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.
Now is the time to join the cosmetology industry!
Before obtaining your cosmetology license, you must first complete the education requirements established by the Hawaii Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, which grants licenses for barbers, cosmetologists, nail technicians and estheticians. The Hawaii Board of Massage Therapy regulates the coursework hours if you wish to become a massage therapist. Each type of license requires you complete the following number of training hours:
- Barber: 1,500 training hours
- Cosmetologist: 1,800 training hours
- Esthetics: 600 training hours
- Nail technician: 350 training hours
- Massage Therapist: 570 training hours
Your license expires on December 31 of every year ending in an odd number. You automatically forfeit your license if you do not renew by that time. If you allow your cosmetology license to expire, you can get it back within three years by following a specific reinstatement procedure.
