An individual may also complete a general cosmetology program and receive approval from the Board to obtain a barbering license. He or she must have completed a crossover course in barbering during a cosmetology program for this option. After you complete a barbering program, you will also need to pass a written exam and practical exam. These exams are administered by the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. A barbering license must be renewed every two years in California.
