Overview of Electrolysis Licensing in Alabama

The Alabama Board of Cosmetology does not currently have a license requirement for electrologists in the state. However, electrologists who plan on practicing electrolysis on a full-time basis may wish to consider becoming a Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). The American Electrology Association Board maintains requirements for becoming a CPE. Having this professional certification can provide you with additional credibility as you network with clients in Alabama. Otherwise, full-time electrologists may also decide to pursue a full-time cosmetology program and complete the 1,200 hour requirement in Alabama. The requirements for a cosmetologist license are completion of 1,200 education hours, completion of the 10th grade and successful completion of a written examination. Applicants must be at least 16.

The BLS currently classifies electrologists under the category of “skincare specialists.” Nationally, skincare specialists earn about $28,900 a year. In Alabama, there are only 210 skincare specialists employed in the state. The BLS expects that jobs will increase at a rate of 22 percent for skincare specialists in the state.Electrologists frequently work in salons and spas. They may also provide hair removal services in medical or dermatology offices. Some electrologists open their own practices and rent space for their individual practice.
