Washington Nail Technician License Requirements

In the early days of the beauty industry, most career paths were not licensed or regulated in any way. However, since all beauty specialties involve the use of chemicals and tools that can be dangerous when used by untrained professionals, industry professionals quickly realized that licensure was an important step in helping the cosmetology field grow.

That’s why the Washington State Department of Licensing requires all aspiring nail technicians to complete a training program that at least 600 hours. After meeting educational standards, applicants must pass a written test and a skills test before getting licensed.

WA Nail Technician License Fees and Hours

• $25 licensing fee
• $60 written exam fee
• $120 practical exam fee
• Fees payable by credit card, cashier’s check, or money order
• 600 hours of training or 800 hours of apprenticeship training

How to Get a Nail Tech License Renewed in Washington

Once you have secured a nail technician license, keeping it renewed is the key to building a long and rewarding career. The Washington State Department of Licensing sets all renewal standards and fees.

Currently, licensees must renew every two years by their original licensing date. The biennial renewal fee is $55. There are no mandatory continuing education hours for renewal. However, keep in mind that this industry changes quickly and you must stay up-to-date on new techniques and styles to meet customers’ expectations. For that reason, continuing education is recommended.
