You must attend a school that is approved by your state to provide training in the discipline you want to practice. Check with the school and the state board to be sure that your program of study will prepare you for any applicable state licensure.

Overview of Cosmetology Schools and Curriculum in Kentucky

Making others look and feel their best is the core of the cosmetology business. For women in Kentucky, you can offer services like nail design, hair design, esthetic treatments, wraps, body waxing and facials. For men, you can focus on barbering and simple grooming techniques in nail care and skin care. In addition to cosmetology and barbering, you can also work as a cosmetology instructor.

Cosmetologist Licensing in Kentucky

There are many great hands on, comprehensive cosmetology schools in Kentucky. You have to attend an accredited training program in Kentucky to get your license. Apprenticeship is not allowed and internship hours do not count toward your license.

There are several licenses you can get from the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists including Cosmetology, Barbering, Nail Technology, Esthetician and Cosmetology Instructor. Tests are only available in English. The training hours you are required to complete in each specialization to test for your license are:

Cosmetology – 1800 Hours
Cosmetology Instructor – Cosmetology License and complete 1000 Hours of additional training
Esthetician – 1000 Hours
Nail Technician – 600 Hours
Barbering – 1500 Hours

All licenses must be renewed annually between July 1st and July 31st. You don’t have to complete any additional continuing education to renew your license, but you should do so anyway to stay current on modern trends.

If you are from another state or country and would like to practice cosmetology or barbering in Kentucky, there is no need to submit an application for reciprocity. All you have to do is pay an out of town exam fee and a license fee, take the Kentucky Written Exam or the Practical Board Exam and have the board that issued your license send proper certification showing that you are currently licensed in that state, county or territory.
