Nail Technician Licensing Requirements in Indiana

The State of Indiana requires those who wish to work professionally as nail technicians to obtain a license. First an applicant for a nail technology licence must show that he or she has completed at least 450 hours of education, a requirement that is generally satisfied when a student graduates from a state-approved nail technology program.

Next, the applicant must take the state licensing exam for nail technicians, which can be taken in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, or simplified Chinese. An electronic exam is available; however, it is currently only offered in English. All licenses that are issued for the cosmetology field, with exception of the barber license, expire August 1st every four years.

Licensed nail technicians must pay a $40 renewal fee by the expiration date, and there is an additional late fee of $50 if the license is not renewed before the expiration date. Licenses that have been expired for more than three years may be reissued once the applicant retakes the practical exam.
