Massage Therapy Licensing Requirements in Hawaii
To become licensed as a massage therapist, students must complete at least 570 hours of training at a state certified course. If they cannot afford to attend that much schooling, students can take 150 hours of massage course work and become licensed as a massage apprentice. The state of Hawaii does not require a National Massage Certification Exam. Instead, it has its own exam for students that are administered on each island. This exam is proctored by Prometric. The test consists of multiple-choice questions that are either direct questions or incomplete symptoms. Questions are about Laws & Rules, Massage Theory and clinical situations. Half of the questions on the test are about anatomy and physiology.

The state of Hawaii has the highest density of massage therapists of any state in the United States. There are a total of 910 workers employed in the field and they make a median yearly income of $40,630. The median hourly wage is $19.53. Out of all employed massage therapists, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that 57 percent of workers in the field were self-employed. The BLS also believes that jobs in the field will increase by 19 percent by 2018.
